Angela Nissel is the author of the best-selling memoir “The Broke Diaries” which was
featured on Oprah and details the shady ways she made ends meet as a broke college
student. She’s also the author of the non-best-selling memoir “Mixed” which dives into
growing up in 1980s Philly and learning the hard way that David Hasslehoff isn’t Black.
Her third book, “Good Grief: Pass The Bread, Mom is Dead” details her journey through
caretaking and grief, while being sued by her mother’s ex-husband for kidnapping.
In addition to being an author, Angela has staffed in writers’ rooms for over 25 years
and produced more than 150 episodes of television. In 2002, she became the first Black
staff writer on Scrubs and since then has written and produced for shows like The
Boondocks, Ginny and Georgia, and The Other Black Girl. She recently made her first
foray into film and co-wrote the upcoming Toni Braxton Lifetime movie, Man Enough.
Among her other accomplishments: in 1999, she co-founded okayplayer.com with
Questlove; Dave Chappelle shouted her out and spilled a joke she told him in
confidence in his Netflix special, and she also serves on the board of Black Girls Film
Camp. Despite all that, she enjoys nothing more than looking forward to bird-watching
in retirement and spoiling her grandson.
